Not many people know this, but every vegetable and fruit in existence has a time it is abundant and ripe, when it tastes the best and costs the least. Some even believe that the human body is designed to consume foods that are in season even though there is no proof of that yet.
Below is some produce that is in season this January.
1. Lemons, oranges, grapefruit
January is known by many as a month partial to citrus. Fruits like Meyer lemons, regular lemons, varieties of oranges, limes, and even the Texas red grapefruit are always plentiful. You can also find blood oranges if you look, Cara Cara navel oranges, and large-size pomelos.
2. Beets, turnips, celery root
January also sees the bloom of beets, turnips, and celery roots. The younger, smaller turnips usually have a sweeter taste compared to the mature ones that will have developed a slightly bitter taste. It is also a great month for horse radish roots.
3. Cabbage, kale, collards, cauliflower, broccoli
Green veggies like cabbage, collards, kale, kohlrabi, broccoli and cauliflower are also common in January. Collards are considered good luck for the new year, and the cauliflower will all have all sorts of festive colors by now, including purple, orange, and light green. The colours are all-natural, with the purple colour being a result of an antioxidant called anthocyanin and the orange a side effect of housing extra beta-carotene. They taste the same as the white cauliflower but with more nutritional benefits.
4. Butternut squash, acorn squash
Butternut squash and acorn squash are sturdy winter squashes that are abundant in January because they have the ability to keep for months after being harvested in the fall.
